THIS WEEK: The layoffs everyone is reading about say IT. The skills gap behind them says sales, marketing, and HR are next. Here is what is actually happening, and how to get ahead of it.

AI Just Cut 40,000 Tech Jobs. Sales, Marketing, and HR Are Next in Line.
By AI News Insider Editorial · 6 min read
TCS cut 12,200 jobs this year. Oracle trimmed 21,000 over the past twelve months. Microsoft cut 4,800. Cisco cut nearly 4,000 despite record revenue. India's five largest IT firms lost a combined 7,389 employees in FY26 alone. Every one of those headlines points at engineers. The real story is bigger than IT, and it is coming for functions that have never had to think about this before.
The layoffs are real, and so is the hiring boom
The same companies quietly restructuring headcount are staffing up AI-centric roles at the fastest rate on record. India's AI hiring rate is now the highest in the world, close to 33%. AI-specific job postings made up just 2.9% of vacancies in January 2023. This month, that share hit 16%. The jobs are not disappearing. They are being redefined, and the redefinition does not stop at the engineering org chart.
The skills gap nobody in sales, marketing, or HR expects to touch them
73% of employers now say they would rather hire for AI skills than a specific degree, and that preference is not staying inside engineering. Sales tools like Outreach and Clari already score deals and draft follow-ups before a rep opens the CRM. Marketing teams are producing brand-consistent content in minutes with tools like Jasper and Venngage. HR just got its own version: Netchex launched Mesh this month, AI teammates that run directly inside ChatGPT and Claude for frontline and deskless workforces. None of these tools eliminate the function. They eliminate the version of the function that does not use them.
The governance gap making this riskier
Gartner projects 40% of enterprise applications will carry embedded agents by the end of this year, up from under 5% in 2025. Those agents are landing inside the CRM, the ATS, and the campaign dashboard, the exact software sales, marketing, and HR teams already open every day. The controls have not caught up. Arctera's State of AI Governance 2026 report found 78% of organizations expect AI-driven communication risk to rise, but few can actually prove their governance works when asked.
Why this matters for you, whatever your function
NASSCOM, McKinsey, and NITI Aayog jointly estimate India could face a shortfall of 1.4 million AI-ready professionals by the end of 2026 if the workforce does not upskill fast enough. That shortage is not just data scientists. It is the sales manager who can read an AI-generated forecast, the marketer directing a content model instead of writing every line solo, and the HR lead deploying an AI teammate without losing the judgment the role still requires.
The Bottom Line for AI News Insider Readers
The layoffs are not a warning about job security in the abstract. They are a warning about which skill set survives the next restructuring. If your role touches a CRM, a campaign tool, or an HRIS, the AI layer is already there. The SHIFT framework below is a simple way to make sure you are directing it, not being measured against it.
You do not need to become an engineer to stay ahead of this shift. You need to be visibly, provably fluent in the AI layer already sitting inside your function. Five steps make that happen, whether you work in sales, marketing, or HR.
S. Spot where AI already touches your role
List every tool in your stack that already has an AI layer, your CRM, your content platform, your HRIS. Most people are using maybe a third of what is already available to them. That gap is the first thing to close, and it costs nothing but attention.
H. Hone one skill deliberately
Do not try to master everything at once. Pick one AI-adjacent skill, prompt writing for campaign copy, reading an AI-generated pipeline forecast, deploying an HR assistant, and get genuinely good at it this quarter. Depth in one area beats a shallow pass across ten.
I. Integrate it into real work, not a side project
Skills-first hiring rewards proof, not certificates. Use the skill on an actual deliverable your manager will see this month, not a course you complete quietly on the side.
F. Flag your progress to your manager
73% of employers are already screening for this. Do not assume it shows up automatically in a review. Name what you have built and what it changed, in plain numbers where you can.
T. Track outcomes, not hours
The teams getting hit hardest are the ones that can only point to activity, not results. Keep a running record of what the AI layer changed for you: deals closed faster, content shipped sooner, hires made cleaner. That record is your case the next time headcount gets reviewed.
Your Monday Morning Action
Open one tool in your stack you know has an AI feature you have never used, your CRM's forecasting layer, your content platform's brand voice setting, your HRIS's assistant. Spend 20 minutes turning it on and using it for one real task today. Then tell your manager what you tried. That is the whole SHIFT framework in miniature, and it starts before your first meeting.
India / IT
TCS Cuts 12,200 Jobs as AI Reshapes Headcount Priorities
TCS will trim about 2% of its global workforce in FY26, concentrated in middle and senior management, citing AI rollout and tighter client budgets. It is the clearest signal yet that AI-driven restructuring has moved past junior roles into management layers.
HR Tech
Netchex Launches Mesh, AI HR Teammates for Deskless Workforces
The new system runs inside ChatGPT and Claude, built for restaurants, hotels, dealerships, and other frontline-heavy employers that traditional HR software has underserved. It is one of the first AI HR launches built specifically around shift-based teams.
Enterprise
Gartner: 40% of Enterprise Apps Will Carry Embedded Agents by Year End
That is up from under 5% in 2025. The applications getting agents first are the ones sales, marketing, and HR teams already live in daily, not niche engineering tools.
Talent
India's AI Hiring Rate Hits a Global High, But the Skills Gap Is Widening
NASSCOM, McKinsey, and NITI Aayog jointly project a shortfall of 1.4 million AI-ready professionals in India by year end, even as AI-specific vacancies climb toward 16% of all postings.
1.4M
Projected Shortage of AI-Ready Professionals in India
By the end of 2026, per NASSCOM, McKinsey, and NITI Aayog. It is not just a technical roles gap.
73%
Of Employers Prefer Skills-First Hiring for AI Roles
Over traditional degree-based recruitment, and the preference is spreading beyond engineering.
40%
Of Enterprise Apps Will Carry Embedded Agents by Year End
Up from under 5% in 2025, per Gartner. That includes the CRM, ATS, and campaign tools you already use.
16%
Of Job Postings Are Now AI-Specific
Up from 2.9% in January 2023, a signal of how fast hiring priorities have shifted.
Netchex Mesh (AI HR Teammates for Deskless Teams)
The easiest way to live the "S" in the SHIFT framework, if you work in HR
What it is: A set of AI HR teammates launched this month, built to run inside ChatGPT and Claude rather than as a separate platform. Mesh targets deskless workforces, restaurants, hotels, dealerships, and similar frontline-heavy employers that most HR software ignores.
Why it matters now: HR tools built for desk workers do not fit shift-based teams. Mesh is one of the first AI HR launches designed specifically around that gap, arriving as embedded agents move into every corner of enterprise software.
Who gets it: HR leads managing frontline or shift-based teams who have been stuck adapting desk-worker tools to a workforce that never sits at one.
• Runs natively inside ChatGPT and Claude, no separate login required
• Built specifically for deskless and shift-based workforces
• Positioned as a "teammate" layer rather than a dashboard employees have to check
"AI has nothing without good data training it."
